Russian missiles hit apartment complexes in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv and its fourth city, Dnipro, for the first time in the new year, causing massive civilian casualties. The UK has decided to provide tanks to Ukraine for the first time since the outbreak of war in February of last year, opening the way for full-scale arms support from the West.
On the 14th (local time), AFP and others reported that Russia launched a missile attack on an apartment in Dnipro, killing at least 14 people, including a 15-year-old girl, and injuring 64 others. At least 26 people are known to be crushed by the wreckage of an apartment building that collapsed horribly in a large-scale air raid, and the death toll is likely to rise further. Among the injured are 12 children, and residents of the apartment are waiting for rescue in the rubble, signaling with cell phone lights. Following the first infrastructure attack of the new year early Saturday morning, the second target in the followingnoon was a nine-story Dnipro City apartment building.
Valentin Leznichenko, governor of Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine, said via Telegram that 38 people were rescued from the wreckage of an apartment building, including three-year-olds among the injured.
The airstrike also included the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, but there were no casualties. It is the first Russian attack on the capital since the beginning of the New Year, and air raid sirens did not sound, causing Russian missiles to evade Ukraine’s radar detection system. “Ukraine does not have the means to track down or destroy the ballistic missiles that Russia appears to have used in the attack on Kiiu,” said Yuri Ignat, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force Command. The Ukrainian Air Force announced that it had intercepted 25 of 38 Russian missiles on the same day. The Ukrainian government said the target of the Russian airstrike was to destroy energy facilities and destroy its ability to produce and distribute electricity, thereby weakening its will to fight. The Kharkiv industrial zone was also hit by two S300 missiles and suffered power outages, while transport infrastructure was hit in the Odessa region.
As the West’s support for Daewoo Kraina’s main weapons is also expected to begin in earnest, there is a possibility that Russia will be at a further disadvantage. Britain became the first Western country to send its main battle tanks to Ukraine. In a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak agreed to send 14 Challenger 2 tanks and 30 AS90 self-propelled howitzers.
Poland also pledged to supply 12 German-made Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. Until now, Western countries have been hesitant to provide main weapons with strong firepower, fearing an escalation of war with Russia.
The British Guardian predicted that the next six months might be a critical period for Ukraine to recapture territory occupied by Russia as the U.S. and Germany have agreed to provide armored vehicles such as the Bradley and Marder, respectively. “Everyone knows what and how to stop those who sow the seeds of death,” said President Zelensky, calling for more arms.
The Russian embassy in the UK protested once morest the tank support and warned that “bringing tanks into conflict zones would cause more casualties” and that “Challenger 2 would be a legitimate target for Russian forces.”
