Pirated version of “Avatar: Way of Water” released in Russia authorized + legalized – Hong Kong unwire.hk

“Avatar: The Way of Water” directed by James Cameron was released in Hong Kong in the middle of last month, causing heated discussions among the public. However, it is reported that Russia actually authorized local theaters to play a pirated version of “Avatar: The Way of Water”.

As the Russia-Ukraine war remains tense, several countries have indicated that they are cutting ties with Russia, causing Disney to refuse to release “Avatar: The Way of Water” locally as scheduled and postpone the release date. Even though Disney did not release “Avatar: Way of Water” locally, “Avatar: Way of Water” still appeared on the big silver screen in theaters.

According to reports, theater owners only need to pay fees ranging from US$790 (approximately HK$6,172) to US$15,820 (approximately HK$123,619) to legally purchase pirated movies from European countries, but the quality of the films will be poor.

With the support of the local government, Russia is working hard to legalize pirated movies. In the past, most of the films were verified by intermediaries from Hollywood at the time of screening, and the film was officially authorized to be shown. However, the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation has proposed a new measure in recent months. Under the new measure, films can be released locally without verification by an intermediary hired by Hollywood.
