MOSCOW – Russian forces have captured the salt-mining town of Zolydar in eastern Ukraine, the Defense Ministry has claimed. However, Ukraine rejected Russia’s claim. Ukrainian forces are still in solidarity and fighting is continuing, Sergei Sherevatyi, a spokesman for the Eastern Ukraine Forces Command, said in Kyiv. It is reported that heavy fighting took place and that both sides suffered significant casualties.
With the capture of Solidar, Russia will be able to block the delivery of supplies to Ukrainian forces in heavily contested Bakhmut. Russian efforts to encircle Ukrainian forces in Bakhmut and capture the city will intensify. The capture of Solidar within 2 days of Russian Army Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov taking direct charge of the war will boost their confidence. With regarding a month left to complete a year of military action, Russia’s move is aimed at an early victory.
Ukraine’s Prosecutor Yuriy Belusov announced that more than 50,000 war crimes have been registered since Russia began military operations on February 24 last year.
