The Lions won in the debut of the World Cup

The Argentine men’s field hockey team, Los Leones, beat South Africa today, 1-0, in the debut in the World Cup that takes place in India, in a match held in the city of Bhubaneshwar.

The only goal of the match, corresponding to Group A and played at the Kalinga Stadium, was achieved by Maico Casella, who plays for the Dutch Hoofdklasse in the Netherlands.

The Lions, currently in seventh place in the FIH ranking, will face Australia next Monday at 10:30 (Argentine time).) and then to France (the coming Friday at 6.30).

This was the third time that Los Leones played once morest South Africa in a World Cup and the previous ones also resulted in triumphs, in Malaysia 2002 by 4 to 1 and in the Netherlands 2014 by 5 to 1.

The team led by Mariano Ronconi has only three of the Olympic champions in Rio 2016: Matías Rey, Agustín Mazzilli and Lucas Vila, and with 11 World Cup rookies.

This is the 13th. Argentina’s participation in a World Cup and the best position was obtained in 2014 (Netherlands), ranking third.
