In the video you can see how some youth players of the U9 sing along with the song ‘Interessant’ by the rapper Jinho 9. The outright racist comments were not long in coming. “Formerly AA Gent, now FC Congo”, someone wrote. “Exactly the U8 of Kenya”, it sounded elsewhere.
“We monitor those reactions closely, and we immediately intervened,” says Tom Vandenbulcke, spokesman for AA Gent. “We have also firmly stated that these kinds of reactions are not allowed.”
However, that response from the club through the official account turned out to be insufficient. All comments have been deleted and no one can post new comments on the video. “Everyone in the club is amazed,” says Sven Vannerom of AA Gent The newspapaer. “Of the 500 reactions to the video, at least 200 were racist or hateful in nature.”
The video itself is still online and will remain so, says Vannerom. “That would be like giving in to those racist comments. We are indeed a multicultural youth academy, where everyone is welcome. That video just stands.”
