Director Cha Mo of the Korea Communications Commission, who was in charge of practical work during the re-approval review of comprehensive programming channels three years ago, was arrested.
The court stated the reason for issuance, saying, “There is a call for the facts of the important charges, and there is concern regarding the destruction of evidence in light of the attitude in the audit and investigation stages.”
On the other hand, the request for an arrest warrant for Yang Mo, director of the Korea Communications Commission, was dismissed, saying, “It is difficult to recognize the reason and validity of the arrest.”
The court judged that “the degree of collusion or involvement of the two directors in the main part of the charges and the explanation for the behavior are not sufficient” and “there is room for dispute whether or not the crime is legally established.”
At the same time, he added, “In light of the suspect’s attitude at the investigation stage, the evidence collected and the progress of the investigation, etc., it is difficult to see that there is a risk of running away or destroying evidence.”
They are accused of inducing deductions by informing the judges of TV Chosun’s scores during the review for reapproval of a comprehensive programming channel in 2020.
At that time, TV Chosun exceeded 650 points out of 1,000 points, which is the standard for re-approval, but the score of key review items such as public responsibility and fairness fell slightly short of the standard, so it received conditional re-approval.
Prosecutors plan to summon and investigate a member of the Korea Communications Commission’s policy committee, who is suspected of arbitrarily assigning judges at the time, sometime next week.
Meanwhile, in relation to the prosecution’s investigation, Korea Communications Commission Chairman Han Sang-hyeok issued a statement yesterday and strongly protested, saying, “If audits and inspections are intended to pressure the chairman to resign midway, they must be stopped immediately.”
He also emphasized, “If there is a problem with the operation and decision of the KCC, the responsibility should lie with the chairman, and the KCC officials should not suffer.”
