Eric La Flèche, the president and CEO of the Métro grocery chain, filled his pockets this year. According to data collected by Stéphane Rolland of The Canadian Press, the president’s total compensation has increased by almost 7% compared to the 2021 financial year and amounts to 5.4 million. As for his bonus, it has increased by 15% and amounts to 1.5 million.
While a lot of grocery store food has never cost more, I find it hard not to feel a sense of unfairness at these numbers.
Just like me, this year, under the constraints of inflation, many Quebecers had to review the way they shop for groceries. Several of us had to make choices in front of the displays to respect our budget. We treat ourselves less, we leave aside food products that we liked to eat because now they are no longer affordable.
And meanwhile, Monsieur La Flèche takes advantage of his bonus.
A thought for you
And you, do you feel the same discomfort as I do when you imagine all that the president of Métro can do with his annual millions, while a large number of those who make him rich are financially weakened by inflation ?
I think of the parents who have to refuse extracurricular activities to their children because this year, groceries are too expensive. I think of all those students who hardly eat vegetables anymore, because they are no longer affordable for them.
Even if our system allows it, I firmly believe that this kind of bonus has no place in a context of inflation like the one we are currently experiencing.
I therefore wish you, Mr. La Flèche, to make the most of your bonus. Benefit for all those who have to put butter back on the shelves because it is too expensive.
