The Nasa offers to admire the Soleil in a riveting YouTube video posted Thursday. Filmed over 133 days, solar activity was summarized in one hour. It was the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) satellite that enabled the capture of its images in ultra high definition (4K), explains Numerama.
Launched in 2010, the satellite filmed solar activity from August 12 to December 22 using three instruments: a tool specialized in extreme ultraviolet light, a helioseismic and magnetic imager, and an atmospheric imagery set.
A satellite orbiting the Earth
But contrary to what one might think because of the exceptional sharpness of these images, the satellite is not near the star. It orbits the Earth at an altitude of 35,786 kilometers.
It doesn’t just film the Sun. According to NASA, the SDO makes it possible to study how the magnetic fields emitted by the star would influence the solar system. Nasa also explained that the video highlights the outer atmospheric layer of the Sun, called the corona.
