Gunmen attacked a train station in Edo state, in southern Nigeria, yesterday evening, and kidnapped dozens of passengers, according to the Nigerian police.
Police spokesman Chidi Nwabuzur said, in a press statement, that a number of passengers were also injured when gunmen carrying Kalashnikov assault rifles attacked a train station, firing sporadically in the air. Most of the victims were passengers waiting to board the Itakpe-Wari train, the police official said.
As a result, the security forces rushed to the scene of the attack and began combing operations to rescue the victims and arrest the perpetrators.
Nigeria, the West African country that is preparing to elect a new president and deputies, on February 25, suffers from widespread insecurity.
Kidnappings for ransom by criminal groups are frequent in the northwestern and central parts of the country.
