For some NGOs, it was incomprehensible to prevent a mother from seeing her daughter. However, this is the situation experienced by Eva Kaila, the MEP at the heart of a corruption scandal. Incarcerated since December 12, her request to see her 22-month-old little Ariadna had not met with a positive response. It is now done.
This Friday, the young Greek woman was able to spend some time with her daughter, in the Haren prison where she is. According to her lawyer, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, Eva Kaili was happy to finally be able to find her, following a month of separation, we can read in La Reppublica.
This moment allowed a parathesis in the gloomy daily life of the MEP. However, mother and daughter were not alone, two psychologists having to be present during the meeting. Remember that it was also a lack of staff that had been put forward as a pretext to refuse the first request for a reunion made during the holidays.
A 2nd meeting planned
According to Me Dimitrakopoulos, “mother and daughter played together for regarding 2h20”. He also describes the atmosphere: “The room was very pleasant and we didn’t feel like we were in a prison. We see in the images broadcast by Star News that the room dedicated to the meeting actually looks more like a classroom than a prison room.
In the wake of this meeting, the Greek lawyer also announced that this meeting was only a first and that Ariadna would find her mother once more “in the coming days”. A new application will be submitted soon.
painful goodbye
Michalis Dimitrakopoulos had already testified that the separation was very difficult for his client. According to Star TV, he clarified that “the moment of farewell was painful for Eva, but fortunately the little one did not understand anything”.
Until then, Eva Kaili did not understand why she was prevented from seeing her daughter and those around her saw it as a way of putting pressure on her to collect her confession.
Since Eva Kaili and her companion Francesco Giorgi were arrested, the girl has been with her maternal grandfather, Alexandros Kaili. It was he who took her by taxi to Haren prison late Friday followingnoon to see her mother. They arrived at 4:20 p.m. and left three hours later, at 7:20 p.m.
On Wednesday, the MEP’s father and his campaign will be called to testify before the Belgian judicial authorities. On December 9, Alexandros Kaili was arrested in possession of a suitcase full of money given to him by his daughter. He was then released.
As for Eva Kaili, she should ask once more, at the end of the month, to end her pre-trial detention in exchange for house arrest with a bracelet.
Note that if a lack of staff had once prevented Eva Kaili’s request to see her daughter from succeeding, a strike will once more paralyze the country’s prisons on January 10 and 11.
