Seoul ranked 7th last year in the urban competitiveness ranking evaluated by the Mori Memorial Foundation Urban Strategy Research Institute, a Japanese private organization, up one notch from the previous year.
According to the 2022 Global Cities Comprehensive Power Ranking (GPCI) recently released by the Mori Memorial Foundation’s Urban Strategy Institute on the 8th, Seoul scored the 7th highest among 48 major cities in the world to be evaluated.
After ranking 13th in the first evaluation in 2008, Seoul rose to 6th in 2017, but its competitiveness declined following 2018, ranking 8th for two consecutive years in 2020 and 2021.
The Urban Strategy Research Institute evaluated the city’s competitiveness in six categories: economy, research and development, culture and exchange, residence, environment, and transportation and access.
Seoul ranked 14th in economy, 6th in research and development, 15th in culture and exchange, 35th in residence, 14th in environment, and 16th in transportation and access.
Overall, 1st place was London, England, 2nd place was New York, USA, and 3rd place was occupied by Tokyo, Japan.
The 4th to 6th places were Paris, France, Singapore, and Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The 8th to 10th places were occupied by Berlin, Germany, Melbourne, Australia, and Shanghai, China.
