Photos that are too artificial
These photographic capacities are mainly linked to the computing power of the device: rather than taking a single photo, like a conventional camera, the iPhone takes several (regarding ten), with different exposuresand then compiles the shots to form one, with maximum detail and dynamics.
Most of the time (like in our example above) it works pretty well : The subject is brightened and the rest of the scene is normally exposed. In the image produced here, we necessarily prefer the second version, whereas the first would have been obtained with a classic camera: to have a normally lit subject, it would have been necessary to use a third party light or to overexpose the scene.
In a controversial videothe famous Youtuber MKBHD believes that ce post-processing
sometimes ruins clichés. He holds as proof that by comparing the Pixel 6A and Pixel 7 Pro, these two devices outperform the iPhone when people are asked what they prefer in terms of photo rendering.
The problem arises especially when a face is too poorly lit naturally. The iPhone then tends to overexpose the person compared to the rest of the scene, also forcing the contrasts, reducing the shadows, which makes the final image a little too artificial
. This over-interpretation is even particularly strong with the iPhone 14 Pro which uses (it seems) all its computing power to further force the line.
Halide’s developer totally agrees with these comments, he feels that in some shots people even appear a little too livid The result is simply shocking
The only possibility to deactivate this post-processing is to shoot in RAW, but with all the disadvantages that this poses in terms of storage and the need for retouching to obtain a more suitable shot. Eventually, it would be above all desirable that Apple offers the choice of retouching or not certain photosespecially during backlighting.
Of course, you can also use third-party apps to take your photos. But the latter cannot be opened from the locked screen for example, and many of us use the Apple one for this main reason.
