The progression of wind and solar power in the Belgian electricity mix makes it possible to achieve yields never before observed in quarter-hourly terms.
On May 11, 2022, solar and wind power produced 7112 MW of electricity. This represented 67% of the total consumption for this hourly shift and the electricity consumption of 7 million inhabitants.
More generally, we have never produced so much electricity thanks to solar energy and onshore wind energy as in 2022. Off-shore wind energy is in very slight decline.
The increase in renewable generation capacity creates a surplus of electricity on which Belgium can rely to continue its exports, mainly to France.
They stood at 22.2 TWH in 2022 compared to 22.8 TWh in 2021. Electricity consumption continues to decrease (-3.3% compared to 2021).
A relative decline of 2% on average from January to September, then a sharp reduction in the last quarter (-11% in November) due in particular to high market prices.
Finally, and unsurprisingly, electricity prices exploded in 2022: the average annual price per megawatt-hour was set at 245 euros, with a historic peak in August 2022 at 448.1 euros.
