The title of the episodes sets the tone. “Glad to see you once more, bitches”, “Massacre this guy”, “I am not Cinderella”… « Ginny & Georgia », whose second season landed this Thursday, January 5 on Netflix, it is a detective comedy with a light and provocative tone. Her heroine, Georgia, has a porcelain face, platinum curls and an hourglass figure. It also takes a few minutes to believe that she is indeed the mother of a teenager (Ginny) and a boy with binoculars. In the screenplay, Ginny and Georgia are fifteen years apart, the two actresses are actually only eight… We must not, however, trust Georgia’s Barbie doll look or the neat pavilion where she lives: “Ginny & Georgia” borrows as much from “Beverly Hills” as from “Weeds” or « Desperate Housewives ».
When the first season (available on Netflix since February 2021) begins, Georgia’s last husband has just died in a car accident. For the umpteenth time, the mother moves with her daughter and son under her arm. She leaves Texas for Massachusetts, where she will start a new life. But here it is: suspicions fall on her and, at the end of the season, we discover that the blonde poisoned her ex because he was sexually harassing Ginny. The mum might even be responsible for another disappearance… Meanwhile, Ginny has fallen in love with her best friend’s twin brother. As for Georgia, she has managed to seduce Paul, the mayor of the city nicknamed “the budding bachelor”, and works alongside him.
Sometimes dark, often funny
At the start of season 2, the two lovebirds are even engaged. And all would be well in the best of all worlds if Ginny hadn’t stolen her boyfriend’s motorcycle to run away with her half-brother Austin to her father, who has just been released from prison. This new burst of episodes connects comical situations (the scene of Georgia’s presentation to Paul’s parents is particularly tasty) and always inspired lines of characters who happily navigate between cynicism and irony. However, the subject is sometimes dark. Between panic attacks and self-mutilation, Ginny no longer knows where she is. Especially when she realizes that her mother considers her a “pawn”…
“Life is a game. If you refuse to play, we’re going to play with you”, proclaims a still unscrupulous Georgia. As funny, confusing and cruel as its main character, this season 2 promises many revelations.
