6-year-old boy arrested for shooting teacher

A 6-year-old boy was taken into custody following shooting a teacher at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Va., on Friday followingnoon, according to Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew.

“The individual is a 6-year-old student. He is currently in custody. We have been in contact with our Commonwealth Attorney and other entities to help us secure the best services for this young man,” he said.

Still according to Mr. Drew, the shooting, of a single bullet, would not be accidental.

An altercation between the teacher, in her thirties, and the student would have preceded the tragedy.

Although the teacher is still in critical condition, Mr Drew notes “some improvement in the latest news we have received.”

The police chief also indicates that an investigation will be carried out to clarify the circumstances of the tragedy.

“I want to know where that gun came from, what the situation was,” he said.
