Nursing Day in Mexico is also celebrated today, Friday, January 6, for which many professionals are recognized for their work in this important branch of medicine.

Such is the case of Andrea Parada González, 27, who shared several experiences and in a short time will be part of the first generation of nurses with a specialty in Surgical Nursing from the Autonomous University of Chihuahua (UACh).

Upon graduating with a degree in Nursing in 2020 and doing her social service at the Lázaro Cárdenas Hospital of the Institute of Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE), she recognized that the most complicated part was the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. 19), since he was just beginning to work with patients and doctors in good shape and when the restrictions arrived, there were complications to continue as was usually done.

However, she was able to experience the generational changes in terms of the difference between doctors and nurses, as well as gradually recognize the work of her profession, since these new mentalities have marked the change.

“Many times, it was said that the doctor was like God and his word was law, however it is no longer so, because the nurse is the main contact with the patient, she knows him, knows his life, his feelings and can give his opinion and now it is seen that our opinion is more respected”.

He agreed that the two branches of health are complementary and working together is the maximum benefit for the patient.

He said that during the pandemic and the confinement the work was very difficult, but the nurse was highly valued, since they had to be in hospitals 24/7 and it was very evident that they are no longer a support for the doctor, they are already a pillar more than medicine.

His specialty will end in August 2024 and it will be a watershed to revalue and recognize such an important profession, now with this additional responsibility, which he hopes will have many more nursing graduates who want to specialize in surgical nursing.

He said that the goal now is to finish the specialty, to uphold the UACh, to be an example for the next generations, to make a difference. That the objective is to ensure that nursing is recognized, valued and above all economically, since it should be much more remunerated due to the enormous value and need that having this profession means, as well as more support for nursing and for it to grow.

Regarding the celebration, last year, the Ministry of Health announced the change of date by agreement of the General Health Council, so it will officially be celebrated merged with May 12, which is International Nursing Day, something that Many people who work in this area disagreed, especially because of the meaning of the day.

Nurse’s Day is celebrated in Mexico on January 6, as the doctor José Castro Villagrana, director of Hospital Juárez de México, instituted it in 1931. Villagrana described the presence of nurses as a “gift from kings” for the patients.

Thus, although it has been officially removed, the tradition continues and today many nursing professionals will be celebrated for their great work and for being like “angels” for the sick.
