BMW i Vision Dee unveiled — a concept car that can literally change color

The Bavarian automaker BMW has unveiled a couple of unusual concept cars that react to the mood of their owner, which can change color or shape. The company called it a “digital emotional experience.” The prototypes have a similar body design and even a common name – BMW i Vision Dee, where Dee stands for Digital Emotional Experience. The presentation took place at CES 2023, which is taking place these days in Las Vegas.

The first of the presented samples is capable of completely changing color, while, unlike last year’s BMW “chameleon”, the current one is available with a full palette of 32 different colors, and the body is divided into 240 independently painted segments, including rims.

The second concept goes even further – it can physically change parts of the body such as the area around the headlights and the grille, creating a semblance of a human face that expresses various emotions, such as happiness, concentration or annoyance.

The most interesting detail of the interior of the car is its head-up display, the presence of which is gradually becoming something ordinary, but this time it occupies the entire area of the windshield, and even partly the side windows. In addition to the usual navigation tips and advice regarding the traffic situation and the technical condition of the car, there are some “digital avatars” that can interact with the driver.

The contents of the projection display can be controlled from the dashboard, which, in turn, is also a projection. The user will be able to choose one of five different levels of presentation of digital content, from the most basic, which includes only the basic functionality, to a full-fledged virtual world that completely replaces the picture from the outside. It is logical to assume that the latter will not be intended for use on the move.

Like last year’s concept from the German auto giant, the i Vision Dee is a full-fledged sedan, not an SUV, because “sedan remains the basis of the brand BMW“, the manufacturer said in a statement.

BMW calls i Vision Dee “another milestone on the way to Neuna Class”, its future automotive platform for electric vehicles. At the same time, a number of innovations can find their application in future models. So, the extension of the projection display to the entire windshield will appear in production models as early as 2025, and the minimalist body design, according to some experts, may anticipate the future i4.
