Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti review: it is sold to play in 1440p, and 4K does not scare it

We discussed the changes brought by the Ada Lovelace architecture in our test of the GeForce RTX 4090 and we refer you to this article to learn more regarding it. The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti does not use the same graphics chip as the GeForce RTX 4090 (AD102) or the GeForce RTX 4080 (AD103), but a slightly smaller version called AD104. This has 35.8 billion transistors, compared to the 45.9 billion of the RTX 4080.

The silicon contains 5 GPC blocks, which results in the presence of 7680 classic calculation units (CUDA Cores). The 3rd generation RT Cores are 60 and those dedicated to AI (4th generation Tensor Cores) are 240, as is the number of units dedicated to rendering textures. Obviously, the large L2 cache system is repeated here, but with 49 MB only.

The etching of the chip is still entrusted to TSMC via its N4 process – 5 nm in reality – which allows Nvidia to offer a fairly high operating frequency. The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti is thus announced at 2610 MHz on average.

For the memory part, Nvidia chose to integrate 12 GB of GDDR6X operating at 2625 MHz on a 192-bit bus only. This results in an overall memory bandwidth of 504 GB/s, a fairly low value for a “70 Ti” model; the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, for example, has 608 GB/s and the RTX 3080 760 GB/s. The architectural advances of Ada Lovelace should nevertheless compensate for this drop in carburation.

Power consumption is given for 285 watts, but Nvidia announces actual operation of between 150 and 240 watts depending on the game and the definition used. No reference card (Founder’s Edition) is offered for sale and only Nvidia’s partners therefore offer their “variants”. We will thus find both models with technical characteristics and others with frequencies and consumption limits revised upwards.

We conducted our tests on a Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Gaming OC, a very marginally overclocked version (+30 MHz on the graphics chip) and whose consumption limit was not affected. In short, a model which, with its three fans, can be seen as a basic model in terms of performance and power consumption.
