The Antioquia authorities are still pending the case of a 27-year-old girl who tried to commit suicide by jumping onto the subway railway line with her seven-year-old daughter in the st antonio station. Almost 24 hours following the accident, the woman died due to the seriousness of the injuries, while the minor is being treated by health specialists from the Intensive Care Unit of the SOMA Clinic.

Around 1:24 in the followingnoon of December 30, the Metro from Medellin activated the emergency protocol following the woman’s suicide attempt, so the two lines of the system were suspended for a while. Officials of the National Police, the Attorney General’s Office and the Fire Department of the capital of Antioquia were notified of the situation and found the young woman with her daughter under the subway rails with difficulties breathing.

On Saturday, December 31, the authorities notified that the mother died and according to the newspaper The Colombianthe victim was named Daniela Rivera, a native of the municipality of Nechí, in Bajo Cauca, and presented a picture of depression On the other hand, according to the magazine Weekthe seven-year-old is in a stable condition, but is still admitted to the Intensive Care Unit following surgery in which doctors amputated one of her lower limbs.

“The girl’s condition is stable, she has already been operated on. The recovery is going to be slow”, explained the Secretary of Health of Medellín, Milena Lopera, and confirmed that the mother of the minor died. “From the institutional offer, today hospitalized, we will continue to provide all the support, both from Social Inclusion, the Ministry of Health and all our professionals,” she added.

Week reported that the girl’s rights will be restored by the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (ICBF), while the Prosecutor’s Office will advance with the investigations of the accident on line B of the Metro, at the San Antonio station.

The Medellín District Ombudsman indicated that, between January and October 2022, there were 2,201 cases of people who have tried to take their own life in Medellín. Of this number, 1,476 are women (67%) and 725 are men (33%). The entity called for “the continuity of the work articulated with the district Health Secretariat and other competent entities, to advance strategies that help prevent and reduce suicidal behavior in the city.”

The Public Ministry agency detailed what are the events that trigger these actions most frequently: 814 cases are related to family problems, 650 due to setbacks with the couple and another 226 due to economic reasons. The loss of loved ones, situations that generate uncertainty within school environments, legal problems, abuse, family problems, and suicides by relatives also induce suicidal tendencies.

For its part, the Single Registry of Affiliates, Births and Deaths (Ruaf) published other statistics regarding the rate of suicides in Antioch. Between January and October 2022, there were 161 deathsof which 30 were women (18%) and 131 were men (81%).
