According to preliminary data published by the Montreal Port Authority (MPA) on 1is January, the Port of Montreal posted a growth of 5.4% in 2022.
After two years marked by declines in cargo volumes attributable to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Port of Montreal experienced an increase in its volumes compared to 2021 with a total of 35.9 million tonnes of cargo which have passed through port facilities in 2022.
“In the great disorganization caused by the pandemic, we have all realized the existence and importance of supply chains and the need to restructure them. The Port of Montreal and its partners can help make this possible, in particular with the development of our major container terminal project in Contrecœur”, declared Martin Imbleau, President and CEO of the MPA.
The container sector experienced a slight increase of 1.2% with 14.4 million tonnes handled.
With the resumption of travel, the liquid bulk sector saw an increase of 10.5% compared to 2021, with 13 million tonnes handled.
The solid bulk sector posted an increase of 3.2% with 8.1 million tonnes. The grain sector experienced a strong recovery with an increase of 18.7% following a difficult 2021 due to droughts. The 2022 harvest promises to be one of the best in recent years.
Finally, miscellaneous and non-containerized goods amounted to 0.4 million tonnes, an increase of almost 90% compared to 2021.
It is important to note that these preliminary results will be subject to audit and will be officially unveiled in full at the PAM annual meeting next May.
