The year 2022 is regarding to end. 2022 was the year when the film world started recovering following the covid. Therefore, many films have hit the theaters this year. 2022 is also the year when South Indian movies dominate the Indian cinema. Malayalam also has a lot of big movies i.e. much awaited good movies. But the movie arrived with high expectations and disappointed the fans. Many films that came with much fanfare turned into flops when they hit the theaters. There have even been superstar films this year that came with high expectations but disappointed the fans.
The first of which is the Mohanlal film Aarat. Mohanlal-B. The Unnikrishnan-Udaya Krishna combo film is one of the biggest flops of the year. The movie hit the theaters on February 18. B Unnikrishnan’s direction, from Udayakrishna’s screenplay to Mohanlal’s performance was disappointing. The drama in the scenes of the movie and the over acting of stars including Mohanlal disappointed the moviegoers.
2022 is generally seen by moviegoers as the year Mammootty rules. Mammootty films like Bhishmaparvam, Pushu, Roshark, Nanpakal Neerth Mayakkam were all successful. But the movie CBI 5: The Brain, which was much awaited by the audience this year, was a disappointment. When the fifth film in the CBI series was released in the K Madhu-Mammooty-SN Swamy combo, there was a lot of hope in the minds of the fans. But CBI 5 was destined to end up as a brain film in name only. Flaws in the script and the making of the film led the film to flop.
The news of Santhosh Sivan donning the director’s shirt once once more following years has garnered a lot of attention. Santhosh Sivan’s film Manju Varrier as the female lead also raised a lot of expectations. But fans who flocked to the theater with hope were met with two hours of disappointment. From Soub’s performance to the story of the film, everything became a victim of severe trolls.
Another flop in Mohanlal’s career this year by joining hands with yet another super hit director. There was hope when Mohanlal came back with Pulimurugan’s Vaishakh. Making a lesbian love story the main theme was promising. But undercover agent Mohanlal’s second film of the year also turned out to be a huge failure.
Alphonse Putra’s film was the most anticipated of all these films. When Alphonse Putra comes up with a film following seven years, it’s only natural that fans get hopeful. As usual, Alphonse warned that the film is not new at all, but there were high hopes for the Gold film starring Prithviraj and Nayanthara. Gold was also the film that disappointed the audience this year.
Malayalam cinema has had its successes and failures this year. 2022 was the year when Kannada and Tamil movies ruled the Indian cinema world. KGF 2, Vikram, Ponniyin Selvan and Kanthara were the highest grossers from Kerala theatres. Anyway, those who disappointed this year can hope to come up with super hits next year.
