Well-known female writer Hua Yan died of illness in Taipei City Zhenxing Hospital on the 10th of this month, at the age of 100. She didn’t start writing early, but her creative career lasted 45 years, and she wrote a lot in her life, including 24 novels, 5 anthologies, and more than 60 self-reported essays.
Huayan’s real name is Yan Tingyun, and he has a profound family background. His grandfather, Yan Fu, was a thought enlightenment figure in the late Qing Dynasty. His father, Yan Hu, was a professor of philosophy at Fujian Union University. His mother, Lin Mulan, was the second daughter of Lin’s family in Banqiao. Mrs. Hua Yan has been familiar with ancient poetry and Buddhist scriptures since childhood, and obtained a Bachelor of Arts from St. John’s University in Shanghai. Later, he married Ye Mingxun, then director of the Taipei Branch of China Central News Agency and a senior media professional.
Huayan’s writing didn’t start until her married children became more independent, and in the 1980s and 1990s, because she served her elderly mother, she was rarely seen at female writers’ gatherings. Lin Daiman, the author of “New Essays on Huayan’s Novels”, pointed out that Huayan once described her first writing desk as a small table on the stairs next to the kitchen, and she used a little time outside of doing housework writing.
Lin Daiman sighed: “We have paid too little attention to the writers who came to Taiwan in the 1950s and 1960s. Without the creation and experimentation of these writers, there may not be more mature works in the future.” She said: “The style of the works at that time was simple. , simple. In addition to the seemingly conservative views on marriage and values, Huayan shows that “pure housewives can also have their own sky” that even today’s women are committed to pursuing, and keeps innovating in the form of creation.”
Taking “Titi’s Diary”, which was adapted into a movie of the same name and won multiple awards at the 15th Golden Horse Awards, as an example, Lin Daiman said: “It can be said that it is Hua Yan’s masterpiece. The view of marriage she presents is to believe in destiny. When encountering twists and turns, we must work hard to adjust, and for many female readers at that time, such values had a positive meaning.” And the success of adapting novels to film and television at that time has also become a good example today.
Feng Deping, editor-in-chief of “Wen Xun” magazine, also pointed out that the fifth and sixth graders should be amazed by Huayan’s first book “Lamp of Wisdom”. I must invite people to buy “Dahua Evening News” just to read the “Lamp of Wisdom” series”, which is evident in the best-selling and good reviews.
Feng Deping said that Huayan’s creations have always been breakthroughs and innovations in themes and techniques, and explored serious issues in a light and playful form. Qiu Nan, a literary critic at the time, classified Huayan’s works as “British and American lady novels” and ” “Little Women” and other views are regarded as popular novels and not limited to love or romance novels.
The “dialogue-style novels” that Huayan tried in his later years completely advanced the plot with dialogues, which was very avant-garde and experimental. “It is very difficult to avoid crossing the boundaries and not confusing through dialogues.” Feng Deping said, which also shows that Huayan Yan constantly surpassed himself in creation, which was also a great encouragement to the creators at that time.
