A man whose hobby is treasure hunting with a metal detector has been reported to have found a treasure-grade earring made in Roman times.
According to the BBC on the 27th (local time), Nick Bateman (53), a British man living in Burston, Norfolk, found a gold earring with a metal detector in a field in southern Norfolk.
“The metal detector signal rang, so I dug up and found a pair of round golden objects regarding 2cm in size,” Bateman said.
He explains that when first discovered, it looked like an ordinary bottle cap. He asked an expert to inspect it just in case, and was able to confirm that it was a treasure-level item.
Appraiser Adrian Marsden, who appraised the object, said, “When I first started appraising, I saw a small cross on the top and thought it was a medieval object.” It is a typical feature found.”
This earring is currently designated as a treasure across the appraisal. It will be displayed at the Diss Museum in Norfolk, near where it was discovered.
“I wonder who the Roman woman who supposedly owned the earring was,” Bateman said. “I also wonder how it got lost in the middle of a field in Norfolk.”
