This known food coloring would trigger the appearance of inflammatory bowel diseases

Inflammatory bowel diseases (or IBD) include Crohn’s disease (MC) and ulcerative colitis (RCH). These pathologies are characterized by inflammation of the wall of part of the digestive tract, mainly due to a dysregulation of the intestinal immune system, as indicated by the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm). Although IBD is most often diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 30, it can however occur at any age since 15% of cases concern children. Several factors, both genetic and environmental, have been implicated to explain the appearance of this inflammation.

In a recent study published on December 20, 2022 in the journal Nature Communications, researchers linked a food coloring found in several foods to inflammatory bowel disease. According to the study authors, the use of synthetic food colors such as Allura AC red, indicated in France in preparation compositions by the code E129, has increased significantly over the past decades, but the effects of these dyes on gut health have been little studied.

As part of their study, researchers at McMaster University (Canada) gave mice Red allura AC dye in their meals for nearly 12 weeks. They discovered that the additive increased the production of serotonin in the colon (…)
