As a person ages, there is a high chance that they will fall victim to a generative brain disease that leads to dementia. In many cases, it is Alzheimer’s disease. In other words, there is a certain difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. We’ll tell you which one.
Alzheimer’s disease is actually one of the causes of dementia
It is estimated that around 50% of people aged 85 and over suffer from dementia. And, unfortunately, dementia is an irreversible and incurable problem, even if there are now drugs that can slow the onset of symptoms. You should know that dementia is not really a disease. It is actually an umbrella term that represents a group of diseases and conditions that affect thinking, memory, reasoning, personality, mood, and behavior.
In other words, dementia is a long and gradual decline in cognitive functions that affects the abilities needed to function normally in everyday life. There are many things that can cause dementia, but generally speaking, the decline is caused by damage or disease that affects certain parts of the brain. And the most common cause of dementia is the disease ofAlzheimer. This means that a person who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease necessarily suffers from dementia.
But not everyone with dementia has Alzheimer’s disease, as there are other possible causes of dementia. These include vascular dementia, Lewy body disease, mixed dementia, frontotemporal dementia and Korsakoff syndrome. Although all of these diseases cause dementia, they all manifest in different ways and are themselves caused by different causes.
Alzheimer’s disease, what is it?
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that causes brain shrinkage (atrophy) and brain cell death. In France, it is estimated that approximately 1 million people are affected by this disease, with approximately 225,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Memory loss is the main symptom of Alzheimer’s disease. The first signs are having trouble remembering recent conversations or events.
As the disease progresses, memory impairment worsens and other symptoms develop. Despite the numerous studies on this disease, its exact causes are still not fully understood. Either way, it’s been known to be linked to brain proteins that aren’t functioning normally, which disrupts the work of brain cells (neurons) and triggers a series of toxic events. Scientists believe that for most people, Alzheimer’s disease is caused by a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors.
Currently, there is no treatment to cure Alzheimer’s disease. However, there are medications that can temporarily slow the worsening of dementia symptoms.
