Violent acts rocked central Paris on Saturday following a protest over the shooting deaths on Friday of three people of Kurdish origin.
In addition to the deaths, three other people were injured following a gunman opened fire at a Kurdish restaurant and community centre.
Clashes at the protest began on Friday, between police and a group that had gathered at the site following the attack.
Footage showed fires in the street and some protesters smashing car windows.
Police riot unit officers responded by firing tear gas as a group tried to break through the security cordon.
Some protesters overturned cars, while others set vehicles on fire.
They also threw objects at the police.
Violence flared once more on Saturday following hundreds of Kurds peacefully gathered in Place de la République to pay respects to the three victims.
Cultural center
Friday’s attack took place at a Kurdish cultural center and restaurant on Rue d’Enghien in Paris’ 10th arrondissement.
A 69-year-old man who described himself as a racist who hated foreigners, a police source told AFP news agency, has been arrested.
The police arrested the suspect who did not resist and reportedly recovered the weapon used in the attack. Prosecutors said an investigation has been opened.
The subject, who is being questioned by the authorities, had recently been released for another attack, which took place in 2021 and was carried out in an immigrant camp.
“We were walking down the street and we heard gunshots,” one witness, Ali Dalek, told the BBC. “We turned around and saw people running
“And then five or six minutes later we walked into a beauty salon where we met people who work and saw that a man had been arrested.”
Another witness, a trader, told AFP that she had locked herself in. He claimed to have heard seven or eight bursts of gunfire.
