A fugitive Venezuelan was captured by the United States authorities, following participating 35 years ago in the murder of a person in a case related to drug smuggling in South Florida.

The subject was detained at the Miami Airport, a local media reported this Thursday.

Ricardo Calderón, 66, was arrested on charges of first degree murder and kidnapping for his alleged involvement in the shooting death of Flavio Castellanos, in a case dating back to August 18, 1987.

Calderón had fled to Venezuela following a “failed cocaine deal” under his charge led to the murder, South Florida channel Local 10 reported Thursday.

The outlet cites the police report by then-detective Pat Díaz, who worked in the Metro-Dade Police Department’s homicide office in those years.

This report refers to Calderón and another man named Zinguer supplying 17 kilos of cocaine for a sale organized by Castellanos and an associate of his surname Ortiz.

The police report indicates that following Ortiz took the cocaine to Fort Lauderdale, a city 46 kilometers north of Miami, to complete the deal, “things went wrong” because the buyers stole the cocaine.

Police found Castellanos’ body in northwest Miami on Aug. 20, 1987 with multiple gunshots, investigator Diaz wrote in the arrest warrant.

Calderón was residing in Caracas when the police issued the search and arrest warrant on September 23, 1987.

Thirty-five years later, Calderón was captured at the Miami Airport in circumstances that have not been clarified and remains without bail at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami.

So far no other arrests related to this case have been reported.
