A criminal escaped from Saint-Gilles prison in March 2020: he was arrested in Guinea

A man who escaped from Saint-Gilles prison in March 2020 was arrested on the African continent last week, the federal police said in a press release on Friday.

AI, a 27-year-old Belgian-Moroccan, well known to the Belgian police, was convicted in our country four times for several armed robberies and received a total of 21 years in prison. He had escaped from Saint-Gilles prison more than two years ago.

On the run, he was quick to reoffend. In May 2021, he allegedly participated in the armed robbery of an armored van north of Amsterdam (Netherlands). The Belgian team specializing in the search for fugitives (FAST – Fugitive Active Search Team) and the federal judicial police in Brussels have found traces of AI in Guinea.

The latter was arrested on the night of December 16 to 17 by the Guinean judicial police, the DCPJ (Central Directorate of the Judicial Police), in Conakry, while the person concerned was going to a nightclub. The Belgian authorities requested his extradition.
