The president of Algeria, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, declared, this Thursday, the 22nd, that his country hopes to join the BRICS as early as next year.
“God willing, 2023 will be the year in which Algeria joins the BRICS,” said Abdelmadjid Tebboune on national television.
The largest natural gas producer in Africa submitted the official request to join the BRICS in November this year. According to the Algerian president, the current members of the BRICS — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — have already approved the African country’s accession to the organization.
BRICS is an informal association of the world’s leading developing economies. Formed in 2006, it aims to strengthen cooperation between these nations and develop common approaches to global economic challenges.
Apart from Algeria, countries such as Argentina, Iran, Turkey, Indonesia, Egypt and Saudi Arabia have already shown interest in joining the group.
