Returning to the Christmas tradition: Charles at Sandringham

The British King Charles III. (74) and King’s wife Camilla (75) arrived at the Sandringham estate on Friday, according to a report by the British news agency PA. The royal standard was already waving there in the followingnoon – a sign of the presence of the monarch. Charles has resumed the British royal tradition of celebrating Christmas together at their lavish Norfolk estate this year.

His mother Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September, had spent the past two years due to the pandemic without visiting family at Windsor Castle. It is expected that Prince William and Princess Kate (both 40) with their children will also join them, as well as the king’s siblings Princess Anne (72), Prince Edward (58) and Prince Andrew (62) with their families.

Traditionally, the royals are filmed attending church at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham on Christmas Day, greeting onlookers before indulging in a roast turkey lunch. However, it is unlikely that Andrew, who has fallen into disrepute for his involvement in the abuse scandal surrounding the late US multimillionaire Jeffrey Epstein, will appear in public.

The Windsors give presents differently than their subjects on Christmas Eve. This has to do with the German roots of the British royals, whose ancestors shaped the Christmas celebrations in the palace according to the traditions of their homeland.
