Mehdi Bensaid announces a revision of the press code and increased financial support

Given the developments experienced by the national press sector in recent years and in order to ensure the proper functioning of press companies, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport announced that the envelope dedicated to the support to the press will increase to 200 million dirhams per year.

Reform of the Press Code

Along the same lines, the Minister stressed the need to carry out a comprehensive reform of the press and publishing code. “It is time to evaluate the previous phase, 2003-2022, in order to identify the successes and shortcomings recorded in the press sector following the adoption of the Press and Publishing Code in 2003”, indicated Bensaid stressing that this will allow a concrete development of serious, responsible media able to provide the right real information.

The minister also underlined that the economic model of press companies should be subject to in-depth examination by moving from the classic model of subsidies to investment.

Human resources are at the heart of the revision desired by the Executive. Indeed, the minister insisted on the improvement of the economic and social conditions of journalists, and this, through the increase in minimum wages, the updating of the collective agreement and the protection of the rights of employees in the sector, in strong consultation with the social protection site. “It is not obvious that the journalist is excluded from this major project in all its dimensions”, he concluded.
