Mexico: Arrest of the brother of a powerful cartel leader
Brother of the leader of the Jalisco Cartel – New Generation (CJNG), Antonio Oseguera was in charge of “the acquisition of weapons” and “the coordination of violent actions”.
Antonio Oseguera Cervantes was arrested Tuesday in Tlajomulco de Zuniga in the state of Jalisco and is considered responsible for the CJNG for “the acquisition of weapons in large quantities” and “the coordination of violent actions”, according to a press release. Nicknamed “Tony Montana”, the name of the character played by Al Pacino in the movie “Scarface”, Antonio Oseguera is also accused by the US Treasury Department of being responsible for the “laundering and international drug trafficking activities” of the CJNG .
Washington is offering a $10 million reward for his brother ‘El Mencho’. In February 2020, his son Rubén Oseguera González, “El Menchito”, was extradited to the United States where he was charged with drug trafficking. The CJNG and the Sinaloa Cartel are considered the most powerful criminal organizations in Mexico.
According to the federal government, members of the CJNG have been holding an army officer, Colonel José Isidro Grimaldo, hostage since December 10. He was kidnapped while on vacation in a town in Jalisco. On June 26, 2020, a heavily armed CJNG commando launched an unprecedented attack on Mexico City’s Secretary of Security, Omar García Harfuch, who had been injured, on one of the capital’s main avenues. In May 2015, the CJNG also shot down a military helicopter flying over Jalisco with a rocket launcher, killing eight soldiers and a policeman. According to official figures, Mexico has recorded more than 340,000 murders since December 2006, most of them attributed to criminal organizations and drug cartels.
