We know it : loss of taste and smell are among the common symptoms of a Covid-19 infection and can last a few days to several weeks. If these manifestations can be disabling, their presence might have a positive explanation: a new study published in the journal Plos One indicates that people facing a loss of taste and smell following an infection au Covid-19 are more likely to develop high levels of antibodies once morest the virus.
According to a study conducted in 2020 by doctors from the Foch Hospital in Suresnes (Hauts-de-Seine) and the University of Mons (Belgium), “loss of smell is a good prognostic factorin the evolution of a Covid”, as indicated in The Parisian Dr. Jérôme Lechien, head of the otorhinolaryngology department at Foch Hospital. And for good reason: “Only 10 to 15%” of patients who had a severe form of Covid-19 suffered from a loss of smell, compared to 70 to 85% among “the mildest cases”.
New work published on December 14, 2022 confirms this finding and adds that loss of taste might also be a positive sign. To achieve this result, American researchers followed 306 adults infected with the coronavirus between April and June 2020. 196 of them reported an alteration in smell and 195 an alteration in taste.
After different analyses, the researchers found that the probability of developing antibodies once morest the virus was 1.98 (…)
