Leinefelde/Thuringia – Terrible accident on the A38 in Thuringia!

A wrong-way driver drove the wrong way onto the autobahn near Leinefelde-Worbis on Tuesday followingnoon and crashed head-on into another car following regarding three kilometers. Three people died.

According to initial findings by the police, a Mercedes had driven onto the Autobahn from the Eichsfeld-Süd rest area – in the opposite direction to Göttingen. The Mercedes with local license plates crashed into a Polish Mitsubishi with full force.

The car was severely deformed and thrown onto the crash barrier. Two people in the Mitsubishi, apparently a Polish couple, died, and the Mercedes driver did not survive the devastating accident either.

A terrifying sight for the emergency services. Henrik Hausmann, deputy fire chief of the Leinefelde-Worbis fire brigade: “We were alerted at around 2 p.m. to a serious accident with people trapped, any help came too late here.”

Firefighters had to cut the bodies out of the wreck. It must now be determined why the Mercedes was traveling in the wrong direction. The A38 was completely closed.
