The Executive suffered a new defeat in the Senate, since the parliamentarians did not ratify Marta Herrera as National Prosecutor. In this way, it becomes the second letter from President Gabriel Boric -following José Morales- who fails to get around this instance in the Upper House.
The Chamber of the Senate rejected the nomination of Marta Herrera as National Prosecutor, for which the letter from President Gabriel Boric falls once more, that now they will have to look for a third proposal.
The director of the Specialized Anti-Corruption and Legal Unit of the Public Ministry required 33 votes in favor to be elected, but only obtained 26. Likewise, there were 11 votes once morest and 9 abstentions.
Everything was said in the Senate. From the ruling party they spoke of “bullying” and “misogyny” of the center-right and of the parliamentarians who interrogated Herrera.
Meanwhile, the aforementioned assured that the candidate was not optimal for the position. This, since she had been part of the leadership and trustworthy leadership of the former National Prosecutor, Jorge Abbott, so her leadership would be “continuism.”
Hours before, Herrera -in her role as a candidate- presented her work plan in the Senate and submitted to questions from parliamentarians. This process lasted from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The lawyer gave brief statements to the press following this process, assuring that she was satisfied with her presentation before the Constitution Committee of the Upper House.
Boric’s reaction by national prosecutor
Now, the Supreme Court must replace Herrera in the list of candidates, which is already made up of the lawyer Ángel Valencia; Carlos Palma, Aysén regional prosecutor; Nayalet Mansilla, regional prosecutor of Ñuble; and Juan Agustín Meléndez, current substitute for the National Prosecutor and regional head of Los Ríos.
Later, President Boric will have to choose between these five names and propose his new candidate for the Senate.
The President was upset with the decision of the Senate, assuring that what happened seemed more like a “cock” of some sectors with the Government and that the common good was not thought of.
“For the second time in a row, the Senate has decided to reject the National Prosecutor proposal that we have made. After the process carried out by the Supreme Court, there were complete benches that announced their vote once morest the proposal that he made before the presentation of the candidate for National Prosecutor”, Boric narrowed.
