Cyril Ramaphosa, who survived the impeachment proceedings, is the party president again South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa re-elected as African National Congress leader

Johannesburg: South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who escaped impeachment on charges of money laundering, has been re-elected as president of the ruling African National Congress.

Ramaphosa, 70, defeated his rival, former health minister Zweli Makhize.

The announcement was made at the end of the party’s national election conference which began on Friday. A close supporter of Ramaphosa, Paul Mashatil, was elected Deputy President.

Mkhize was removed from the ministerial post following being accused of involvement in the fraud of millions of rands, the South African currency, during the Covid pandemic. Last week, Ramaphosa survived a motion for impeachment in a vote in Parliament.

Ramaphosa denied the Fangate scandal in June. He has not been charged.
