Available since November 23 on Netflix, the Wednesday series narrates the adventures of young Wednesday Addams (daughter of Gomez and Morticia, and sister of Pugsley), a student at Nevermore Academy. Spectators can thus discover this brand new version of the famous Addams Family, worn in particular by actress Jenna Ortega, who perfectly embodies the young Wednesday. Recently, Wednesday was already breaking a first record on Netflix… but that was only the beginning.
Everything is (very) good for Wednesday on Netflix
Indeed, the American platform announces that its Wednesday series has just crossed a symbolic threshold, which had only been reached so far by season 4 of Stranger Things and by the Squid Game series.
“The Wednesday series starring Jenna Ortega topped 1 billion hours watched with a total of 1.02 billion hours watched, becoming the third title to hit that milestone in its first 28 days of availability, along with Stranger Things 4 and Squid Game” says the platform. The series headed by Tim Burton has also exceeded The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which accumulated 856.2 million hours of viewing in 28 days.
Despite a relatively shy reception when it was launched, the Wednesday series quickly established itself as a new phenomenon, inspiring many content creators on TikTok.
The syndrome “Wednesday Addams” even inspired a certain Lady Gaga, who had fun (still on TikTok) to recreate a certain dance scene. The subject #WednesdayAddams has more than 17 billion views on TikTok, and many viewers confirm the quality of the series, often following hesitating to be tempted at launch, given the first feedback that is not always very positive.
Also, just like Stranger Things has allowed millions of viewers to (re)discover many hits from the 80s/90s (by Journey, Kiss, Metallica, etc.)the Wednesday series has revived the excitement around the title Goo Goo Muck de The Cramps (de 1981).
Netflix can therefore be smiling at the end of 2022, not to mention the fact that the platform is also among the main nominees for the Golden Globe Awards 2023, with 14 nominations for television and nine for cinema. As for “Wednesday”, the series picked up two nominations, including Best Television Series (Comedy), not to mention Jenna Ortega, who was nominated for her part in the Best Actress category. We are now waiting to see if, in the coming weeks, little Wednesday will be able to prove herself stronger than Stranger Things and Squid Game.
