Recording some 134 million USD in revenue between Friday 16 and Sunday 18 December, director James Cameron’s film is however slightly below specialists’ forecasts.
Worldwide, the film also grossed an additional $300 million.
And with more than 430 million USD, Avatar 2 achieves one of the best box office entries since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Again located on the planet Pandora, The way of the water tells a story set more than a decade following the events of the first film.
U.S. Marine Jake Sully (played by Sam Worthington), has transitioned into the body of a Na’vi, the tall, blue-skinned people of Pandora, and works with them to protect their habitat from a fatal threat.
Another sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverhas therefore lost first place and is far behind Avatar with $5.4 million in revenue between Friday December 16 and Sunday December 18.
After six weeks of release, the Afro-futuristic Marvel film has grossed nearly $419 million at North American box offices, and $367 million worldwide.
The third place in the ranking is occupied by Violent Night (5 million), action comedy where the star of Stranger Things David Harbor plays a grumpy, sledgehammer Santa when bad guys break into the home of a wealthy family.
Avalonia, the strange journeyDisney’s animated film is in fourth place with 2.2 million USD, while The Menuwhich borrows from horror cinema, film noir and squeaky comedy starring Ralph Fiennes, takes fifth place with 1.7 million USD in revenue.
