For Gareth Southgate (52) and his English team it was over in the World Cup quarter-finals in Qatar once morest finalists and world champions France (1:2). Since then, the rumor mill has been bubbling as to whether the “Three Lions” will stick to their coach.
Now it’s clear: Gareth Southgate remains coach of England despite all the criticism!
The English media report unanimously. Southgate left his future open following losing the World Cup once morest France.
He said: “I have found large parts of the last 18 months difficult” and that he now has to “think” following the World Cup.
According to the British media, he is said to have agreed to fulfill his contract, which runs until December 31, 2024. Southgate definitely wants to play the next European Championship in Germany, reports the “Sun.”

As a possible successor to the England coach, the name of the German Thomas Tuchel (49) kept haunting the English media.
As BILD reports, the English association “FA” had with Tuchel, who has been without a coaching job since leaving Chelsea in September.
BILD knows: With a view to the World Cup, the English association (FA) had felt the German coach out because trust in Southgate had dwindled in the meantime (including bankruptcies once morest Hungary, relegation from the Nations League). Tuchel would probably not have been averse to leading England to Qatar.

But the World Cup changed everything in Southgate’s favour. The FA now want him to continue – because he’s managed to forge a real, promising team.
Against defending champions France, runners-up England were the better team in a top game, had more possession and chances to score.
But England failed once more at the penalty spot.
Ironically, Harry Kane (29), who had safely converted his first penalty, threw the second far over it with too much risk (84th). A goal would probably have meant extra time. “It wasn’t his fault. We win and lose as a team,” Southgate defended his captain.
And he’s campaigning for Southgate. Kane: “We played a great tournament and I think we have a bright future. We love having Gareth as a coach and want him to stay. It is his decision.”
And Southgate seems to have made that decision…
