Peru is experiencing a third day of state of emergency, this Saturday, December 17 and the political crisis is bogged down. At least 20 protesters have died on the sidelines of protests over the past week and a half. Twenty roads are still blocked. President Dina Boluarte therefore spoke this morning.

She has been repeating it since the beginning of the crisis. Dina Boluarte, the new president of Peru, still calls for peace and dialogue. ” Not one more death “, she said at a press conference. She urges Congress to resolve the crisis by voting to advance the elections.

On Friday 16 December, a first bill was rejected by congressmenpreventing the elections from being held in December 2023. Dina Boluarte adds that she will not resign, as demanded by some demonstrators in the street.

A large majority of Peruvians want general elections

In a televised message to the nation, Dina Boluarte lamented the violent protests that began on December 7. Some of these deaths occurred following clashes with the military, authorized to control internal security as part of the establishment of the state of emergency. ” It is only through calm, cordiality and a sincere and open dialogue that we will be able to work […] How can we fight between Peruvians, mess up our institutions, block the roads ? “, she said.


The demonstrators once more called for mobilizations this Saturday. And continue, in some parts of the country, to block the roads. Their objective is always the same: dissolution of the congress, new elections and constituent. According to the Institute of Peruvian Studies, 7 out of 10 inhabitants do not approve of the appointment of Dina Boluarte. And 83% want new general elections to resolve the crisis.
