Christiane Hörbiger buried: “Happy Birthday” and final applause

The farewell party for actress Christiane Hörbiger, who died on November 30 at the age of 84, was a multi-faceted staging on Saturday followingnoon in the Karl Borromäus Church at Vienna’s Central Cemetery.

Numerous fans and companions had already taken the opportunity to sign a book of condolences since 9.30 a.m. “You were an enrichment of our lives” might be read there as well as “I was allowed to put make-up on you once!”

Former Federal President Heinz Fischer also left a farewell greeting, as did Vienna’s City Councilor for Culture, Veronica Kaup-Hasler (SPÖ), who emphasized in her speech: “Christiane Hörbiger was a grande dame of theatre, film and, in a very special way, also one of television.” She paid tribute to the extraordinary charisma of the actress and recalled the attributions that have accompanied Hörbiger throughout her life: “Acting legend, thoroughbred actress, queen of the performing arts, darling of the public…”

She personally remembers “her grandeur, her dignified appearance and her beauty into old age”. As the daughter of Paula Wessely and Attila Hörbiger, being born into such a prominent artist dynasty is “a privilege, but certainly also a burden,” said the city councilwoman.

Farewell words from producer Markus Trebitsch

The producer Markus Trebitsch also confirmed this in his parting words: “I can tell you that your entire life was not easy and had little to do with the flashbulbs at film premieres,” he said. He remembered their first encounter in 2003 on the occasion of the ARD film “Alpenglühen”, which was followed by nine other productions over the course of 15 years. However, Hörbiger always had difficulties with the term “Grande Dame”, noted Trebitsch and tearfully said goodbye to the great artist and trusted friend: “It was a great pleasure to have met you.”

“Happy Birthday” for grandson Luca

After Dompfarrer Toni Faber had speculated whether Christiane Hörbiger, who is now in heaven (where there is no peace in the cemetery) “in a very big spectacle” might take part, up there also punch lines that make the angels clap their hands, Hörbigers took hold Son Sascha Bigler takes the floor. Instead of parting words (“I’m a shame today”), there was a surprising invitation to participate: Hörbiger’s grandson, his son Luca, is celebrating his 18th birthday today – which is why he – “although it’s certainly terribly embarrassing for him” – those present ask for a “Happy Birthday” together – which was also given with organ accompaniment.

Final applause below the sounds of “I did it my way”

Under the sounds of “I did it my way”, the mourners, including the sisters Maresa Hörbiger and Elisabeth Orth, the nephew Cornelius Obonya and the niece Mavie Hörbiger, left the church – accompanied by a final applause from those present . Christiane Hörbiger was then buried in a grave of honor next to Kammersängerin Renate Holm.
