Connor McDavid showed a lot of frustration with the referee’s decision to call Leon Draisaitl’s goal offside in overtime on Thursday.
While everyone believed the Oilers had escaped with a win thanks to Leon Draisaitl’s goal, officials ruled that McDavid had caused an offside at the blue line. The St. Louis Blues finally left Edmonton with a 4-3 shootout win.
“Ever since I was little, I thought it was okay to cross the blue line in possession of the puck. The real question is whether I had control of the puck or not,” McDavid said following the game, according to TSN.
“The league needs to clarify some of these rules. What is a kick? What is offside? What is goalie interference? Seems like it depends on the night. It’s disappointing.”
Still, the Oilers were leading that game 3-1 in the third period. A turnover from Darnell Nurse sank the Oilers late in the period, as the Blues had narrowed the gap to just one. The Alberta team thus let slip this lead and the game went into overtime.
Nurse disappointed with his game
Darnell Nurse didn’t hesitate to put the blame on his back.
“It’s unacceptable on my part,” Nurse said. I let my teammates down. We should never have been in this position in overtime. I play too many minutes in important situations to make games like that,” he added.
For his part, the head coach of the Oilers, Jay Woodcroft, criticized his players for having played softly and for not having played three complete periods.
“We put ourselves in a position to win this game, but in the end it’s a 60-minute game, not a 59-minute game,” explained the coach.
