While WhatsApp is best known for delivering private and secure messages to users around the world, more and more people are using WhatsApp as a way to connect with voice and video calls. For this reason, throughout this year the APP has launched several improvements in calls, so that you can catch up with your loved ones, colleagues and communities safely.
“We introduced new features that allow you to better connect as a group on calls,” WhatsApp said in a statement.
Here’s what’s new:
- Video calls with 32 people: As with calls, you can now make video calls on your mobile with up to 32 people, that is, with four times more people than before.
- Message or mute call participants– Long press on a participant will expand the video or audio feed and allow you to mute or message that person separately without leaving the call.
- call links: Whether you’re making a last-minute call or planning a call ahead, you can easily invite people to a group call by sharing a call link.

Also, the APP made design changes to provide a smoother calling experience:
- colored waveforms: Now you can easily see who is talking if their camera is disabled.
- In-call banner notifications: Get notified when someone new joins a group call.
- Picture in Picture on iOS: It is being tested in beta version to be implemented next year. Thanks to a minimized in-call video screen, you can now multitask while in communication.
As always, all calls on WhatsApp are end-to-end encrypted by default to protect people’s privacy and security.
