The ID family is one year ahead

Volkswagen is one year ahead of schedule with the electrification of its vehicle fleet. Since the handover to the first ID 3 customer in October 2020, Volkswagen has been able to deliver 500,000 cars from the ID family worldwide. The order backlog at Volkswagen is currently still high: “We are doing everything we can to deliver the approximately 135,000 IDs that have been ordered to our customers as quickly as possible. However, the still tense supply situation for parts repeatedly leads to production adjustments,” explains Imelda Labbé, Board Member for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales at Volkswagen.

From 2033, Volkswagen intends to only produce electric cars in Europe. From as early as 2030, at least 70 percent of Volkswagen sales in Europe should be purely electric cars. In the USA and China, the company is aiming for an e-share of more than 50 percent in the same period. To this end, Volkswagen will be launching ten new electric models by 2026. “Volkswagen thus offers the widest range of electric models of any manufacturer: from the entry-level electric car with a target price of less than 25,000 euros to the new flagship Aero B, we will have the right range in every segment,” explained Labbé.

Volkswagen sees the ID family as a pioneer in the field of software integration. Volkswagen continuously provides owners of ID vehicles with updates “over the air”. In this way, the car remains up-to-date over its life cycle and is constantly being improved with new functions. “We have had very good experiences with this over the past few months,” says Labbé, “because the advantage is that we can transfer customer feedback directly and at short notice to new functions such as increased charging capacity or showing the battery capacity in the driver’s display”.

The modular electric drive kit (MEB) is crucial for the accelerated ramp-up of the company’s global electric offensive. The vehicle architecture from Volkswagen, specially developed for the electric drive, offers long ranges and plenty of interior space. The MEB is the technical basis for the fully electric and fully connected cars of the ID. Family. By focusing on the purely electric drive and the usability for vehicles of different classes in the entire Volkswagen Group, the MEB enables economies of scale and thus reduces the costs of e-mobility.
