Starting January 1, 2023, Microsoft will offer EU and EFTA customers data processing and storage on servers in the continent for most of its cloud services.
Microsoft has announced the availability of its EU Data Boundary solution from January 1, 2023. The supplier specifies that this gradual introduction concerns public administrations and commercial customers in the EU, but also in EFTA – therefore also in Switzerland. .
Announced Spring 2021, the solution allows customers to process and store all their data in Europe. In its release, Microsoft says its engineering work to deliver EU Data Boundary “is well on its way and will be completed by the end of 2022.”
The introduction of the solution will be carried out in three stages. First the processing and storage of customer data for Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, Power Platform and the majority of Azure services. Then, by the end of 2023, the solution will integrate pseudonymised personal data. Finally, during 2024, customers will have the possibility to process and store in Europe the data provided as part of the technical assistance, as well as the remaining “non-regional” services.
EU Data Boundary is Microsoft’s response to the concerns of Swiss and European firms regarding cloud data territoriality requirements.
