Hay up to six interested teams on Puerto Rican Carlos Correa, sources told The Athletic’s Jim Bowden (subscription required). But Bowden also adds that there are two teams that seem to be shaping up to be the favorites to win the star shortstop: Twins and Cubs.
“There are signs that the Twins and Cubs appear to be ahead, but it only takes an owner from another team entering the bidding at the last minute to change the equation,” Bowden said.
It has been reported that the Twins gave him a “gigantic” offer to Correa, while the Cubs have also been linked with Dansby Swanson this winter. The Giants, who have been unable to land a top free agent this offseason, reportedly have Correa as your main goal now.
Los Yankees have also been linked with the Puerto Rican, but now they seem more focused in the opener Carlos Rodón. MLB Network’s Jon Heyman wrote Monday that while the Yankees have an eye on Correa, they are “finding it difficult to see him as a fitting piece, both financially and on the field, with three shortstop candidates, plus veteran DJ LeMahieu and Josh Donaldson, whom they view as difficult to trade following poor seasons with the bat.
Bowden lists the Braves, Tigers, Angels and Red Sox as the teams Correa would best fit in with, but the level of interest from those clubs isn’t known.
