SickKids Hospital in Toronto braces for another wave of infections

The institution came under enormous pressure in October and November, and had to cancel surgeries to deploy more intensive care staff.

The urgency of SickKids currently sees regarding 240 patients a day compared to 320 in recent weeks, according to the director of the service, Dr. Jason Fischer.

However, internal tests conducted by the hospital indicate that influenza cases are on the rise. In contrast, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections are on the decline, according to SickKids.

In the past, SickKids has always been busy during the holidays.

The hospital is bracing for an increase in ER patients as it anticipates another wave of respiratory infections that might last until March.

To limit overflows, the hospital has launched a program of virtual consultations. Technicians have also been trained to take blood samples, in order to free up nurses.
