Books – Sayed Metwally

Cirrhosis is referred to as scarring or cirrhosis of the liver caused by various types of liver-related problems such as hepatitis and chronic alcoholism. Scar tissue gradually replaces healthy tissue in the liver, eventually making it less effective.

Here are 5 early signs of cirrhosis that you should not ignore, according to timesofindia.

The role of the kidneys

Our liver is responsible for performing many functions in a single day to keep us healthy. It removes toxins from the body, makes enzymes that help us digest food, stores sugar and nutrients, and helps fight infection.

When the liver is injured for any reason, healthy liver cells become inflamed or die, followed by the process of cell repair, which often causes scar tissue. The accumulation of scar tissue in the organ disrupts its functioning and leads to cirrhosis.

Although there is no cure for cirrhosis, early detection of the health problem can delay or stop scarring and reduce complications that, if left untreated, can become fatal.

Who is in danger?

Cirrhosis is a secondary health condition that is often caused by another liver problem or disease. If you don’t treat your liver condition, it will get worse and turn into cirrhosis over time. Here are some of the conditions that may put you at risk of developing cirrhosis.

alcohol abuse for years

Hepatitis

Uncontrolled diabetes

Obesity

Injecting medications with shared needles

History of liver disease

Unprotected sex

To reduce the growth of unhealthy cells, you must know the symptoms. This will help you to take the right treatment at the right time. Cirrhosis does not show any sign until the liver damage spreads. Here are the signs and symptoms that you may experience:

Easy bleeding or bruising

Our liver produces protein with the help of Vitamin K which is necessary for blood clotting. Besides, the organ also helps in breaking down old or damaged blood cells. When the liver is injured, it does not produce enough protein because you bruise easily.

Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)

Jaundice is a condition in which the skin and sclera turn yellow. The skin takes on this color due to an elevated level of bilirubin, which is a yellow-orange pigment secreted by the liver. When the liver is bruised, it fails to regulate the amount of bile in the body, which leads to this condition.

swelling in your legs, feet, or ankles (edema)

Swelling in the legs and arms also occurs due to decreased production of a protein called albumin. This protein prevents blood from leaking out of the blood vessels into the surrounding tissues, when there are fewer protein fluids begin to accumulate in the blood vessels.

Fluid buildup in the abdomen (ascites)

In chronic liver disease, fluid may accumulate in the abdomen, causing flatulence. This may make your abdomen appear tight and swollen. Due to a malfunctioning liver, fluid begins to fill the space between the lining of the abdomen and the organs.

Weight loss

Unexpected weight loss without diet and exercise can be a cause for concern. It is often an early sign of cirrhosis and should not be overlooked. If you notice a decrease in your body weight, consult your doctor.
