Berri calls for transforming the presidential election session into a “dialogue”

The Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, demanded that the parliamentary session, scheduled for next Thursday, to elect a president of the republic, be transformed into a dialogue session, in an attempt to open a loophole in the impasse that is hindering his election. While a prominent parliamentary source confirmed that the overwhelming parliamentary majority expressed its immediate approval of his invitation.

The source told Asharq Al-Awsat that Berri is waiting for the reaction of the Lebanese Forces and the Free Patriotic Movement, so that he can build on what is required. Because their failure to respond will push towards extending the play of disrupting the election sessions indefinitely, and this is what leads to crowding the representatives in front of the Lebanese public opinion, and through it the international community, which insists on stopping the farce of the calls for the election sessions that end with the continuation of the vacancy in the first presidency.

The source pointed out that the mere agreement of the “Lebanese Forces” party and the “Free Patriotic Movement” to participate in the dialogue session in search of a way out leads to removing the election of a president from the political impasse, which is still besieging it. He means that the path may be clear to agree on the name of the candidate who enjoys the support of the parliamentary majority, warning that their non-participation will inevitably lead to a repetition of the obstruction play.

He believed that the coming hours would be decisive to determine the possibility of proceeding with an open dialogue session, or returning to the election sessions, which would end in the same way as the previous sessions. He said that the participation of one of the parties to engage in the dialogue will prompt the President of the Council to confirm his call for dialogue, although he would prefer that the answer come to him in a way that leads to the completion of the contract of those invited to the dialogue.
