Panaji – Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated Goa’s second international airport to the nation. The airport at Mopa was named following former Goa Chief Minister and late BJP leader Manohar Parrikar. Modi inaugurated the first phase of the airport built at a cost of Rs 2,870 crore in North Goa.

“This state-of-the-art airport will enhance Goa’s connectivity and tourism potential. The Manohar Parrikar International Airport is a proof of the government’s thinking and approach in infrastructure development of the country. Our aim is to make air transport possible in the small cities of the country” – Modi said.

Modi himself laid the foundation stone of the airport in November 2016. It has the capacity to accommodate regarding 44 lakh passengers annually. It is estimated that the number of passengers will be one crore when the airport is fully operational. Another airport in the state, Dabolim, has a capacity of 85 lakhs. There is no facility for cargo transportation here; Mopa has cargo facility.

The buildings were constructed using 3D monolithic precast technology. The airport also features facilities such as 5G technology, solar power plant, green buildings, renewable sewage treatment plant, rain water tanks and self baggage drop. Earlier, experts had opined that the airport at Mopa can be modeled following Cheruvalli in Kerala.
